Shall we say swords? Pistols at dawn?

18. INT. OLD HOME BAR. NIGHT. WINTER

Sinartra on the juke. Hansen, Sol, Bender, and Neilson play pool.

NEILSON: Incoming, gentlemen.

About six women have entered. Well, five and one. The blonde in the lead is simply perfect. Pan across the guys' stunned faces.

SOL: Ay-yi-yi. Deep breaths.

Nash sits at a table strewn with books, drawing some patterns on endless cocktail napkins. Favor the boys as they follow Hansen to Nash's table, a better vantage point from which to ogle the now sitting girls.

SOL: Nash, you might want to stop shuffling your papers for five seconds.

NASH: I will not buy you gentlemen beer.

BENDER: Oh, we're not here for beer, my friend.

Sol points his finger at the smiling girls.

NASH: Oh. Does anyone else feel she should be moving in slow motion?

BENDER: Will she want a large wedding, ya think?

SOL: Shall we say swords, gentlemen? Pistols at dawn?

HANSEN: Have you remembered nothing? Recall the lessons of Adam Smith, the father of modern economics.

SOL: "In competition....

SOL & NEILSON: ...individual ambition serves the common good."

HANSEN: Exactly.

NEILSON: Every man for himself, gentlemen.

BENDER: And those who strike out are stuck with her friends.

Then Nash's gaze fixes on the girls.

HANSEN: I'm not gonna strike out.

SOL: You can lead a blonde to water, but you can't make her drink.

HANSEN: I don't think he said that.

SOL: Nobody move. She's looking over. She's looking at Nash.

HANSEN: Oh, God! He may have the upper hand now, but wait until he opens his mouth.

Incoming, gentlemen. Ay-yi-yi. Deep breaths.

긴장이 될 때 심호흡은 'Take a deep breath'이고 긴장해서 숨을 죽이다는 'hold one's breath'다.

Oh. Does anyone else feel she should be moving in slow motion? Will she want a large wedding, ya think? 이때 특정한 사람에게 나타나는 특별한 분위기를 aura라고 한다. ex) The ceremony retains an aura of mystery.(그 의식은 신비스러운 분위기를 간직하고 있다.)

Shall we say swords, gentlemen? Pistols at dawn? Have you remembered nothing? Recall the lessons of Adam Smith, the father of modern economics.

■ Woman preparing to wed is fearful of growing apart (관계가 소원해 지는 것이 두려운 결혼을 앞둔 여성)DEAR ABBY:

I am a 27-year-old woman who has been dating my boyfriend for a number of years. As exciting as the thought of marriage sounds, it is also scary. Too many times I have heard that a couple separated because they had "grown apart" or "grew in different directions."

How does a couple go about preventing this from happening? There have to be things we can do to protect ourselves against this -- but what are they? Your advice would be appreciated. -- SKITTISH IN MAPLE GROVE, MINN.

DEAR SKITTISH: Couples grow apart when they stop talking and listening to each other, when they fight instead of disagree, and when they forget the reasons why they married in the first place. They also run into trouble if they're not on the same page before marriage about how to handle money, whether they are sexually compatible, and how their children should be raised.

Premarital counseling is helpful in bringing out these issues, and some churches now insist upon it. Intelligent people get to really know each other before taking the leap, as you and your boyfriend have already done. However, even longtime couples need to make sure they have all their cards on the table before embarking on the sea of matrimony, and to fully recognize they cannot change the other person.

DEAR ABBY: From time to time you print helpful hints from readers, and mine could possibly save some families from incurring an expensive plumbing repair.

I have been married and divorced twice. As a younger man, my wives and I always flushed our cigarette butts down the toilet when in the bathroom. One day, we had a serious plumbing problem -- our toilet overflowed. After getting the plumbing bill we found out all the cigarette filters had eventually closed up our sewer line. It was a costly lesson I hope other smokers will heed -- and I'm not even mentioning the risk of cancer. -- SMARTER NOW IN THE U.S.A.

DEAR SMARTER NOW: I won't mention the subject of cancer either. Thank you for your helpful suggestion, as well as the reminder that toilets were not intended for the type of butts you were flushing.
