South Korea’s LG Chem will build a hydrogen plant with an annual capacity of 50,00 tons at its Daesan complex, in the southwest of Seoul, the company said Monday.

The plant, when completed in the second quarter of 2024, will be its first plant to produce pure hydrogen, aside from that produced from existing processing facilities as off-gasses.

LG plans to convert methane from the naphtha cracking center (NCC) to hydrogen through a chemical reaction under high-temperature steam at the new facility. The hydrogen will be used as fuel for the naphtha cracking process for the production of basic petrochemical feedstocks.

Methane, a heat source in the NCC process, is the main culprit for emitting a large amount of carbon dioxide. By replacing the material with high-purity hydrogen with no carbon emissions, the chemical firm will put its carbon neutrality commitment into action, reducing emissions by 140,000 tons annually when the plant is fully in operation. LG also plans to increase clean, renewable energy in the NCC process by up to 70 percent by 2025.

In addition, the firm will team up with Taekyung Chemical, the largest producer of industrial liquid gases, including liquid carbon dioxides, magnesium hydroxides, and liquid calcium hydroxides, in Korea. LG will supply carbon dioxide, collected in hydrogen production, to Taekyung, for its reuse. Taekyung will be able to increase its daily carbon production capacity from 820 tons to 1,420 tons. “LG will work to create a sustainable future through hydrogen production and carbon reuse,” said the company in its press release.

LG Chem shares were down 1.38 percent to 570,000 won ($441.45) in Monday’s morning session.
