Korean scientists successfully separated and cultured the monkeypox virus for the first time, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) said Wednesday.

The virus, which was separated from a specimen extracted from a positive patient, has a 99.87 to 99.99 percent resemblance to the West African clade, currently prevalent in Europe and the United States, according to the KDCA.

It plans to share the nucleic order of the monkeypox virus with the international genome sample resource database.

“We will share the resource with the appropriate institutions so that the separated virus could be used to develop vaccines and drugs,” KDCA commissioner Peck Kyong-ran said on Wednesday.
