With Chuseok right around the corner, the fields in Cheorwon glisten in the warm autumn sunlight, as seen from the peak of Soisan Mountain. From the top of the mountain, the territories of North and South Korea nearly blend together. The mountain’s summit provides a clear view of some of the places where intense battles took place during the Korean War, such as the Battle of White Horse. Though only days earlier both North and South Korea tested missiles, the air here is filled with resounding peace.

North Korea’s Goamsan Mountain. In September and October of 1951, during the Korean War, extensive fighting took place to secure this mountain. Ultimately North Korean captured the mountain, in what they consider one of their most representative battles from the Korean War. (Kim Tae-hyeong/The Hankyoreh)
